An Open Letter from Robert Marcello
SVS, Sacramento Volvo Service was conceived and initiated in 1980. Robert Marcello, a 25year old Volvo mechanic saw a need for personalized service for Volvo owners in the Sacramento area of California.
Robert, who two years prior, was honored as one of America's finest technicians by Volvo, the Swedish auto maker. Robert Marcello was 23 years old and at the time was the youngest technician for Volvo to be enlisted as a member of Volvo’s “VISTA” organization. Vista which stood for “Volvo International Service Technical Association” was indoctrinated into Vista during the 1978 Volvo Vista conference in Gothenburg Sweden representing one of eleven American colleagues to represent the United States.
Receiving the personal acknowledgement and international honor was just the beginning of Robert's journey in the automotive world via Volvo.”It was likened to getting my blackbelt” Robert noted. “ It was just the beginning of my learning process for the Volvo car.” I was very young and looked at very differently by the Volvo technicians who had more years experience than I had.
Automotive technicians, “mechanics”, had not been put on a pedestal up to this particular part of automotive history. Robert was eager to learn and move up in his career more than ever. Having spent his time at the dealerships, his desire to provide a better service was much accepted by Volvo owners, not so much for the dealerships and the factory representatives as a whole.
Robert’s first hurdle was his name,Sacramento Volvo Service.A name which seemed larger than a local dealership. Robert shortened the name to “SVS” “Sacramento’s Volvo Service”. A name which held the test of time.
Starting small and growing tall, SVS has taken many steps over the years to provide several aspects of the trade, employing nearly eighty individuals and multiple buildings supporting various employee specialties.
Today after 45 plus years of service, Robert will be promoting today’s SVS as a dedicated restoration and service center for the classic models. Models mainly from last century, but available for those in need. Robert will be working alone with an apprentice to share his skill with. The cars which brought people together and earned the company a place on the planet, will continue to be served as they deserve.
Today’s Volvo cars have evolved to a “credit card and software” position. The classic cars still require “parts and knowledge” still to this day. The only problem seems to be the lack of Volvo technicians with the know-how to facilitate a nostalgic experience even though there are more self proclaimed experts than actual experienced people.
It will be my goal to continue with my skills to maintain a Happy and Proud Volvo owner.
SVS will now be a one man shop with experience of more than one. Volvo owners are unique and just as special as the cars they love.
SVS’ new address is SVS Automotive Corporation, 2509 Tower Avenue, Sacramento, California, 95825. Robert is available on the web at the form link below and by phone: 916-201-1382.
