Irv Gordon, a New York schoolteacher who became world famous for driving his 1966 Volvo 1800 S over 3 million miles, died on Thursday at age 78.
The Long Islander was traveling in China at the time of his death.

Traditionally most engines were expected to burn a little oil and adding a quart every 1000 miles was considered normal. As emissions and fuel mileage demands increased throughout the late 20th century the demand for much more efficient engines became paramount.
